CrimeBeat FundingThe High Sheriff’s continue to be a valuable part of PACT, and with their Crimebeat fund we have been able to support a wide range of projects carried out by young people across North Wales over the past year.  This funding has enabled over 1,000 young people to carry out projects and initiatives in their own communities. These projects have included:

 ·         Supporting young people to be part of the Criccieth-in-Bloom festival

·         Working with PCSO Mark Hughes in Dolgellau to set up a supervised off-road motorcycle club to enable young people to learn about safe riding in a supervised environment.

·         Young people from the Pupil Referral Unit at Bryn Tirion in Shotton carried out an environmental project to improve the public access areas adjoining the school.

·         30 pupils at Ysgol Belmont special needs school in Buckley produced a mosaic based on their community, and how the school adds value to its local area.

·         Pupils from Ysgol Thomas Jones in Amlwch worked with Weston Spirit on a Challenge Day to look at aspects of good citizenship, anti-social behaviour and the effects of these on society.

·         Over 200 young people from Wrexham Homework Club will be undertaking a project that they had suggested on the subject of road safety.

·         Pupils in Blaenau Ffestiniog are currently producing a film on the Yellow card scheme and anti-social behaviour that will be used with schools throughout Gwynedd.

·         Another film is to be shot in the Summer Term by pupils at Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle on the subject of cyber-bullying – including text, mobile phones, and internet bullying.

·         Crimebeat in conjunction with PACT was instrumental in bringing in over £7,000 worth of support for the Central Park environmental project in Connahs Quay last year. This support came from our links with Airbus UK and Arts and Business.

Communities First Trust Fund

An extra £1 million has been made available for the Communities First Trust Fund Wales 2007/2008.   Local community groups and organisations are able to apply for grant funding up to £5,000.  The scheme, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, is spread geographically across the 142 Communities First wards, sub wards and Communities of Interest based across Wales. These areas have been identified via the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation.   The fund aims to support any type of activity that involves local people through small community organisations that benefits their community.  The deadline for the Trust Fund has been extended until 15 February 2008.  UK Villages:-

UK Villages offers grants to support a wide variety of projects, which are of benefit to local communities.  Grants of between £50 and £300 are available to such community groups as playgroups, older peoples groups, youth groups, village halls and community centres, playgrounds, environmental project groups, fetes etc.  In previous years grants have been awarded to such diverse groups as sewing and knitting circles, book clubs, playgroups, toy libraries, scout groups, young farmers, and community centres. Projects must be clearly identifiable, as grants will not be given for running costs. The Performing Right Society Foundation (PRSF)

has a number of grant programmes running, with different deadlines throughout the year. There are currently seven grant schemes open to application:

• ACW/PRS Foundation Steps to New Music - Grants to support the creation of innovative new music, by music creators working in collaboration with dance companies for performances taking place in Wales. All costs involved in creating pieces of music are eligible, however, the dance element must be funded from other sources. The average award is between £3,000 and £5,000., and the closing date for applications is 8th February 2008.

• Awards to Festivals – Grants for UK Festivals, programming new music by UK based music creators. Grants are for overall costs and not single performances.  There are two deadlines: 12th February and 14th August 2008. 
• Awards to Organisations – Grants for new, not-for-profit, organisations, where music is their main activity. Grants can cover 12 months activities or programme, including core and running costs. The deadline is 12th February 2008.
• Awards to Promoters – Grants to support a wide range of promoters of live, new UK music of any genre.  Promoters of unsigned bands are also eligible to apply.  The deadline for applications is 25th April 2008.
• Awards to Performance Groups – applicants will be performance groups who meet regularly and perform either original music or a wide range of music by living UK resident music creators.  There are two deadlines: 12 February and 14 August 2008
• PRSF/Bliss Trust Bursaries for Composers – Grants for UK based composers developing new classical music. Funds are not awarded towards the costs of curricular studies at any level.  There are two deadlines: 28 March & 29 August 2008.
• Awards for New Works – Funding to support those wishing to commission a new piece of music from UK based music creators, which can be composers, songwriter, or producers.  The scheme will support a wide range of new works in a variety of genres. The average grant amount is £3,000 to £4,000. The two deadlines for applications are: 25 April and 17 October 2008.

The Camelot Group :-

has announced it will cease funding the Camelot Foundation this year.  The Foundation has, until now, funded the Transforming Lives Programme benefiting vulnerable young people with funds totalling approximately £2 million a year.  A final limited programme is expected to be announced for spring 2008, and then the Foundation will close.  http://www.camelotfoundation.org.uk/

The European Commission:- 

has allocated a total budget of € 21.35 million to the Drug Prevention & Information Programme, for the period 2007-2013.  Grants will be available for activities, which significantly reduce the social harm and health damage caused by the use of, and trade in, illicit drugs, including dependency and prevention. The budget for 2007 is €3 million, and the 2007 Call for Proposals is expected to open imminently (mid January - but details have not been announced as this goes out).  WREN:-

 is a not-for-profit company and registered environmental body that operates under the landfill tax credit scheme distributing landfill tax money donated by the landfill operator Waste Recycling Group Ltd.  WREN award grants to improve community life by enhancing existing facilities as well, as providing new facilities, including play areas & village halls. Community Sustainable Energy Grant (UK) The Big Lottery Fund has announced the launch of a new Fund to help local communities reduce their carbon footprint. The Community Sustainable Energy grant scheme, which will be managed by renewable energy specialists Building Research Establishment (BRE), will provide financial support to grass roots organisations such as schools, charities and community groups to install small-scale energy efficient technology such as wind turbines or solar panels on sites including village halls, visitor centres or schools. Funding for Children’s Summer Playschemes (UK) Each year the Trustees of the LankellyChase Foundation set aside funds for summer playschemes for children between the ages of 5 – 13 years. Preference is given to small local playschemes lasting 4 - 6 weeks, and groups planning special activities for youngsters who are disadvantaged. This includes summer activities for children in refuges and young carers. The Trustees particularly welcome applications from black voluntary sector and minority ethnic groups. A limited number of grants are disbursed in small amounts, between £200 - £500, to organisations in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. £1 Million Available to Support Youth Projects (UK) Young people are being given the chance to claim a share of £1 million to help tackle the dangers of drugs, crime and play a positive role in their community. The Royal Bank of Scotland Community Cash Awards will see £1 million of grants being distributed by youth charity “The Prince’s Trust” to young people who want to run community projects in some of Britain’s poorest areas. The Awards, worth £250 to £5,000, are available to disadvantaged 14 to 25-year-olds who want to transform their area and learn practical skills. Projects could range from improving local youth facilities to tackling teenage pregnancy or drug misuse. Projects must be run and managed by people between the ages of 14 and 25; clearly benefit the local community; benefit the people running the project; and be a new or developing project. Big Lottery Fund Healthy Families: Child's Play Programme (Wales) This is a £13 million grant making programme aimed at promoting healthy and active lifestyles among children and families by creating a joined up approach to children’s play, healthy eating and physical activity. The Child’s Play programme is one of two programmes under the Healthy Families initiative in Wales. The other programme is called Way of Life. Under Child’s Play, grants of between £250,000 and £1 million are available to build capacity to deliver play opportunities; deliver play opportunities in spaces or settings that offer children a broad range of opportunities and experiences; benefit children between the ages of 0-12 living in Wales, particularly children between 8-12; and activities that promote strategic links between nutrition, physical activity and play. The funding is open to voluntary, community or public sector organisations that are either working individually or in partnership. New Fund Launched to Deliver Positive Outcomes to Vulnerable Young People (UK) BBC Children in Need and the Hunter Foundation have launched a new £2 million grants programme to fund innovative and effective projects that have the potential to deliver positive outcomes to some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the UK. The programme, known as “Positive Destinations”, will take place over three years and is aiming to award three large grants of around £500,000 each and three smaller grants which will have the remaining £500,000 divided between them. Positive Destinations aims to deliver sustainable support to these young people to ensure that they achieve a positive future in terms of education, employment or training. The programme will seek to support projects that target either key points in determining a young person's future (i.e. pre-school, transition from primary to secondary education and the 14 – 16 year period prior to work or further education) or a holistic approach in delivering positive outcomes. Mentor UK CHAMP Awards (UK) Mentor UK, the drug and alcohol misuse prevention charity for children and young people, is calling on the public, professionals and young people to nominate projects for the Mentor UK CHAMP Awards . This is a biennial awards scheme aimed at recognising projects in England, Scotland and Wales that can help prevent children and young people aged 14 or under from misusing alcohol – both now and in their future lives. In 2008 Mentor UK are seeking projects that promote healthy attitudes and behaviours and which help children and young people to avoid the dangers of alcohol misuse. Awards will be made in the following three categories: for work in schools; for work in the community; and for projects led by young people. The 2008 winners in each category will each receive £10,000 cash and a further £10,000 worth of consultancy support to help them improve, expand and share their activities. The final selection of winners will be made by panels of young people aged 14 and under. B&Q You Can Do It Awards (UK) B&Q have announced that the ‘You Can Do It’ Awards will re-open for applications on the 28th January 2008. The awards aim to play a key part in helping local communities create inclusive and sustainable projects. Awards in 2007 included the refurbishment of local sporting facilities; social enterprise workshops and community facilities as well as equipment for improving community gardens. Under the scheme, community groups and charitable organisations can apply for awards ranging from £1,000 to £10,000 worth of B&Q products. The closing date for applications will be the 28th March 2008. BBC Children in Need (UK) The next deadline for applications to the BBC Children in Need is the 30th March 2008. BBC Children in Need provides grants for up to three years to properly constituted not for profit organisations working with disadvantaged young people aged 18 or under . Funding is available to organisations, (including schools) that work with young people who are suffering from illness, distress, abuse or neglect, are disabled, have behavioural or psychological difficulties and / or are living in poverty or situations of deprivation. Active Living Fund (UK)Grants of up to £1,000 are available through the Kellogg’s Active Living Fund for projects that remove the “barriers” which stop people being active. The fund is open to charities and other voluntary and community organisations as well as Schools for activities that directly lead to people taking part in sustained physical activity. In particular, the Fund is looking to support projects that implement innovative ways of getting non-active individuals active; existing projects or activities that adapt or expand so that they are available to new groups of people or new geographical areas; and existing projects or activities that need new or replacement equipment, or existing projects that require replacement funding. A panel of Kellogg’s employees meets every two months to assess applications. Applicants should receive a decision on their application within approximately 10 weeks of submitting your application. Crisis –Changing Lives Programme (UK) Crisis, the national Homeless Charity has announced that the Changing Lives Programme has re-opened it “Changing Lives” Programme.  The Crisis Changing Lives programme provides financial awards of up to £2,000 to single people who are homeless or settling into a home and looking for support so that they may achieve their vocational goals. The Award will fund; accredited courses that are linked directly to an applicant’s vocational/career goal; tools and equipment for courses that are linked directly to an applicant’s vocational/career goal; tools and equipment to use for a job linked directly to an applicant’s vocational/career goal; tools and equipment and practical costs to become self employed; and to attend a training course or help buy tools and equipment necessary for a course or even to set up a business. Applicants must be; single (not living in a partnership situation with another person); over 18; living in secure accommodation (not sleeping rough and not squatting); free from alcohol, drug or other substance misuse for at least 6 months prior to application; unemployed or underemployed (earning less than £18,000 in London and £15,000 outside); working with a Support Worker for at least 6 months prior to the application; and eligible to remain and work in the UK indefinitely. Modbury in Devon has led the way lets get Barmouth onboard and involved ASAP.

43 traders and shopkeepers in Devon’s shopping town of Modbury will stop giving plastic bags to customers as of the 1st of May. The ban is expected to continue for a minimum of six months.

The idea was initiated by wildlife camerawoman Rebecca Hosking (33), who was heartbroken after seeing the effects of rubbish on marine wildlife in Hawaii. She said about 100 billion tonnes of plastic are floating in world oceans and harming creatures

Local traders, including co-op hope to be the first in Europe to scrap plastic bags and will provide 100% biodegradable cornstarch bags, recyclable paper bags or reusable cotton bags instead.

Organisers say they have had interest from other towns who want to learn how to start similar schemes.

One woman on holiday from Northern Ireland even bought 18 reusable bags to take back home.
